Dr. Matherne also performs Mohs surgery to treat certain skin cancers. Mohs surgery is a highly sophisticated procedure where the skin cancer surgeon also acts as the pathologist. After removal of a skin cancer, histologic sections of the entire surgical margin of excised tissue are examined to ensure the complete removal of the malignant tissue. This is the treatment of choice for skin cancers that involve cosmetically and functionally sensitive areas.
